2022 So Far

 Mr.D’s Art Room Report:

So Far in 2022

Introduction to Drawing is working on the Object out of place lesson, the first step was for them to begin to understand the ideas of how to look at an object critically. They began this by learning to look at an image and break it down into basic shapes, circles, squares and triangles.  No matter how complicated an object is, it can be broken down into these three shapes or a variation of them.  Then the class learned about the use of parallel lines to make an object recede into space.  Combining these two skills is part of the goal for this project, how to see, how to combine the two skills learned and to create with synthesis of these skills  They also learned how to use colored pencils to their fullest potential.

Mixed Media

is working on a new skill.  They have learned how to collage and de-collage pieces and they now are learning to make stencils.  Mark Bradford was the artist that was the inspiration for our collage and de-collage work.  We learned about Shepard Fairey when we began exploring stencils.  Stencils are being created and then they are going to use them in conjunction with a collage ground to make finished artwork.  This last skill they learned was embellishment which is gold leafing.  Our current project combines at least 3 of the 4 skills we have learned so far this semester.  I am amazed with the progress this semester.

Portfolio has begun to create a group of work that will serve as a basis for their portfolios to apply to schools either as a supplemental peice to their application or a larger piece if they plan on majoring in art as they move forward.  We just got back from Castle Island on our field trip to explore the idea of Place, we looked at Andy Goldsworthy as our inspiration.  Here is a link to the video we watched.

Andy Goldsworthy - Earth Artist and his Process

Drawing and Painting 1 has been working on their observational drawings that concentrate on the idea of contrast or dark and light areas.  We have a collection of solid black and white objects that we have been using as subjects and we have been drawing with both chalk and charcoal.  We have been using a series of different papers, black, white and gray.
