Mr D's Art Room Report 3/10/22
This week in Mr.D’s Artroom report:
Introduction to Drawing is working on the Object out of place lesson, the first step was for them to begin to understand the ideas of how to look at an object critically. They began this by learning to look at an image and break it down into basic shapes, circles, squares and triangles. No matter how complicated an object is, it can be broken down into these three shapes or a variation of them. Then the class learned about the use of parallel lines to make an object recede into space. Combining these two skills is part of the goal for this project, how to see, how to combine the two skills learned and to create with synthesis of these skills They also learned how to use colored pencils to their fullest potential.
Mixed Media is working on a new skill. They have learned how to collage and decollage pieces and they now are learning to make stencils. Mark Bradford was the artist that was the inspiration for our collage and decollage work. We learned about Shepard Fairey when we began exploring stencils. Stencils are being created and then they are going to use them in conjunction with a collage ground to make finished artwork.
Portfolio has begun to create a group installation that will be part of their Advanced students show in April. Stay tuned to this page for the invite.
Ava Eielson was a big winner at this year's Scholastic Art and Writing awards with 2 Gold keys, 2 Silver keys and 2 Honorable mentions. Congrats Ava! Some of that work will be on display at the Advanced Students show.
Drawing and Painting 2 has just finished up 2 weeks of figure drawing in several styles of drawing. They learned both gesture drawing and contour drawing. The
took turns modeling for the class. They are now using that skill to create comic book covers that revolve around the figure and will continue to use each other as models for this work.
Ceramics and Sculpture 1 have been making monster or animal mugs to learn different clay techniques, they learned a little about the physics of how clay works and the proper ways to make a mug. They learned slipping and scoring, how to roll out slabs and most importantly how to maintain a clean studio space. The mugs are coming out fantastically. Next up learning how to glaze and the right way to do it.
